The rural artisans that work for saomao are paid fairly for their products. By working at a local grass roots level with those involved in making crafts or supplying locally available raw materials villagers have greater choices for themselves and their families. Employment opportunities encourages villagers to stay in the rural areas with their families rather than joining the increasing numbers of migrant workers pouring into the cities and shanty towns in search of work.
